Foods to eat with IBS is a difficult answer to provide. Everyone with IBS tries to figure out what the best IBS diet is for them. The problem is everyone is different and has their symptoms for different reasons, so a simple list of foods to eat for IBS is also different for every person with IBS. The better solution is to learn what are the bad foods to eat…and stay away from them permanently or temporarily. And, as part of Dr. Dahlman’s phone consultation treatment program, he will personally design a diet specifically for you to maximize your chances of completely eliminating this condition.
Your diet for IBS is best accomplished by an understanding of what foods contribute to IBS symptoms. Each person has a different biochemistry and health history. Most people eat differently from one another, so a diet of foods to eat for IBS doesn’t always offer the common sense answer one may be looking for.
In order to design a diet of foods to eat for IBS, we do so by describing the foods to NOT eat. Once we understand that, it means that all other foods are safer to eat for IBS.
Unsafe Foods to Eat with IBS
Unsafe foods begins with the elimination of all dairy products except butter. Obvious dairy products are all liquid milks, cheeses, ice cream, sour cream, cottage cheese, cream cheese and yogurt. Avoid them. Unsafe foods can also be those where you find the words milk, cheese, lactose, whey and casein in the ingredient list. Check all ingredient lists diligently and never assume there is no dairy in a product. You may be surprised. A more detailed discussion can be found in Dr. Dahlman’s free IBS report available for download on this page.
Gas causing unsafe foods are beans and legumes. They can also cause stomach aches, burping, nausea, heartburn or GERD. Avoid them to see what benefit occurs.
Another unsafe food to eat with IBS are gluten containing foods. Remove all wheat, oats, barley and rye from your diet. A more detailed discussion can be found in Dr. Dahlman’s free IBS report available for download on this page.
More and more people with IBS recently have found that fructose containing foods are also unsafe foods to eat with IBS. If you have a fructose intolerance, you may know it as something on this list of fructose containing foods has probably caused you some trouble. Fructose avoidance makes all fruit unsafe to eat. You cannot eat any type of sugar. The unsafe vegetables to eat that contain fructose are corn, beets, carrots, peas, tomatoes, onions, eggplant, sweet potatoes, parsnips, turnips and winter squash. A more detailed discussion can also be found about this topic in Dr. Dahlman’s free IBS report available for download on this page.
There are other unsafe foods NOT to eat with IBS because some people may find them irritating. Be wary of nuts and seeds. Sometime the eating of nuts creates many little pieces with sharp edges that can irritate the bowels. Nut butters are much safer to eat.
Surprisingly, lettuce or spinach can be unsafe food to eat as well and can drop a person to their knees in pain or cause loose bowels. You would know if this is bothering you.
Raw vegetables can also be considered unsafe foods to eat with IBS as they are more difficult to digest than steamed or sauteed vegetables.
By learning the above foods may be unsafe to eat, this means that almost all other foods might be safe for you to eat. Any or all of the above advice may be helpful for you and might reduce your symptoms of IBS. But, usually IBS is not just a problem with your diet. It’s a problem with diet as a result of a diminished bacterial (probiotic) presence and imbalanced chemistry of the tissue that lines the bowels.
A comprehensive natural treatment plan designed to re-establish the beneficial bacterial balance, identify any organisms that should not be present in your bowels, improvements in chemistry of the gut with nutritional supplements and the use of digestive enzyme.
