A collagenous colitis diet can be helpful, but your diet will probably be different than another patients diet and must be determined for each individual, not with a “one size fits all” approach. As part of Dr. Dahlman’s phone consultation treatment plan, he will personally design your diet to maximize your chances of treating this condition sucessfully.
Collagenous colitis is a subtype of microscopic colitis characterized by chronic diarrhea. The colonoscopy is normal but the mucosal biopsy reveals an accumulation of collagen (proteins of connective tissue) in the colonic tissue.
Individuality is determined by genes and biochemistry, so one diet doesn’t work for everyone. A diet for collagenous colitis is figured out by eliminating some common foods that all other collagenous colitis patients should not eat, but also by learning what foods you are allergic to based on food allergy lab testing.
No Gluten and No Dairy
What not to eat is is the most important concept. No gluten containing foods and no dairy products begin the plan as both are pro-inflammatory foods.
Gluten containing foods are found in any foods made from or with wheat, oats, barley and rye.
Please also eliminate all dairy products with the exception of butter. This food group is the #1 dietary villain that most people eat and all patients with bowel problems should not. Please read all ingredient lists on all labels on products in your house looking for the words milk, cheese, lactose, whey and casein. It may surprise you where you will find hidden dairy and being a “dairy detective” can assure you of no mistakes with your diet.

Colitis Food Allergy Testing
Because you’re different than others suffering from collagenous colitis, fine tune your diet, create a specific diet for collagenous colitis through a food allergy test and reveal the foods that are contributing to the inflammation of colitis and causing your symptoms. Learning this information solves why you cannot figure out what to eat or not eat on your own. It is Dr. Dahlman’s belief that no collagenous colitis patient can get well without learning their food allergies.
By avoiding dairy, gluten and the foods found positive on your food allergy test, this means all other foods are considered safe to eat…for now.
If you continue to have symptoms even though you follow the above advice and are using the all natural supplements Dr. Dahlman recommends, the elimination of fructose may be necessary.
Not by all, but many doctors are finding increased numbers of patients with lymphocytic colitis who are having trouble with fructose containing foods. Fructose is found in all fruit, peas, tomatoes, onions, eggplant, sweet potatoes, corn, beets, carrots, turnips and winter squash. Additionally, all type of sugar must also be avoided (table sugar, sucrose, honey, maple syrup, molasses, agave, cane sugar).
Once again, more detail can be found in Dr. Dahlman’s free Crohn’s/Colitis report available for download at the bottom of this article.
A planned step-by-step process of elimination of the above foods while using all-natural supplements to re-establish beneficial bacterial balances and restore proper chemistry while also using natural anti-inflammatory herbs make up the main parts of Dr. Dahlman’s diet for collagenous colitis treatment. (Please understand not everyone needs to eliminate all of the foods and their elimination may or may not be permanent.)
