Lexapro is an antidepressant used to treat anxiety and major depression. Lexapro is part of a group of drugs called selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) that positively affect serotonin levels in the brain. By preventing the “re-uptake” of serotonin (the removal of serotonin from the body) Lexapro preserves more for the body to use to maintain a patient’s sense of well being.
