Finding an IBS with diarrhea diet is a difficult goal for those who suffer. IBS with diarrhea may be caused by different foods in different patients. There are some foods and food groups that may be helpful in eliminating from your diet in order to reach a specific diet for you.
An IBS with diarrhea diet, also known as IBS-D is what many think will be the solution. Many symptoms can accompany IBS, but diarrhea can really change one’s quality of life.
It’s not that easy to describe as each sufferer has it for different reasons and they also have a different food list that causes IBS with diarrhea.
A diet for IBS with diarrhea always begins with the elimination of the #1 dietary villain, dairy products. This means a 100% elimination of all products from a cow other than beef or butter…if you choose to eat them.
This is unfortunately a rule that must be followed 100% – as are all dietary rules when trying to learn what foods cause IBS with diarrhea. To not do so is a recipe for failure as there is no way anyone could know how small of an amount of any of these dietary villains cause your symptoms.
Dairy is contained in all the liquid milks, cheese, ice cream, sour cream, cottage cheese, cream cheese and yogurt. For a comprehensive diet for IBS with diarrhea, please read all the ingredient lists on all the products you have in your kitchen, looking for five words:
- milk (or any word attached to this word)
- cheese
- lactose
- whey
- casein
Make sure you scour any food you might order in a restaurant looking for hidden dairy there also. Ask your server for help.
Another Food for an IBS with Diarrhea Diet
Another food group to consider in your IBS with diarrhea diet are fructose containing foods. This is easily one of the harder foods to give up. They include: all fruits, natural sweeteners such as sugar, honey, molasses, maple syrup and agave, corn and corn products such as corn syrup and high-fructose corn syrup; and sweet vegetables such as beets, carrots, eggplant, onions, peas, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, turnips, and winter squash (acorn, buttercup, calabaza, delicate, Hubbard, spaghetti, sweet dumpling and turban). You should see a reduction in your symptoms within a week or so if fructose is your problem.
Finding sugar in your diet can be a bit more difficult. To do this, you need to read ingredient lists. But don’t confuse a product’s ingredient list with its “Nutrition Facts” label.
Describing the product’s serving size, total servings per container, and total fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrate, sugar, and protein content, along with vitamin and mineral content, the sugar mentioned here is not what concerns us. We’re talking about added sugar which will be found in the ingredient list, not the naturally occurring sugars that come from the carbohydrates in food which will be listed as “sugars” in the “Nutrtion Facts” panel. Yes, carbs break down into sugar, but again, that’s not the sugar with which we’re concerned in this step.
The most common sugar are: cane sugar, cane sugar juice, high fructose corn syrup and any sugar that ends in “ose”…like sucrose, fructose or glucose. Honey and maple syrup also contain fructose. So does agave…the plant from which tequila is made.
