Stomach and abdominal pain can be a confusing problem as there can be many causes. It is also difficult to describe for some if the pain is actually in the stomach or elsewhere in the abdomen. The cause of stomach and abdominal pain is mostly a dietary issue but is sometimes more confusing in people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease or any type of colitis.

Stomach pain happens in the actual organ called the stomach and abdominal pain happens anywhere on the front of the body other than the stomach. The stomach is the organ at the end of your esophagus (throat) that the food falls into after you swallow. Sounds simple so far, right?

The abdomen is an anatomical area that is below the ribs and diaphragm and above the pubic bone and also includes the sides of the front of your torso.

Stomach pain is specific to the stomach and abdominal pain is used to describe pain originating from organs within the abdominal cavity such as the small intestine, colon, liver, gallbladder, spleen, and pancreas.

Cause of Stomach Pain

Cause of stomach pain is many and varied. Typical indigestion can be the cause of stomach pain after eating foods that don’t agree with you. The main foods that could be the cause of stomach pain are diary products, beans and legumes and less frequently, fructose containing foods which are fruit, corn, beets, carrots, tomatoes, onions, peas, eggplant, sweet potatoes, turnips and winter squash. Fructose is also in any food with added sugar (think sweet treats like dessert and candy). The above foods can cause gas and/or bloating and that may be the cause of stomach pain.

Cause of Abdominal Pain

Cause of abdominal pain is also varied and many times are the same as with stomach pain. The cause of abdominal pain would occur in the small or large intestine…after the food has exited the stomach. The liver, gall bladder or pancreas may also be involved depending on the type of pain and location.

The main foods that could be the cause of abdominal pain are also diary products, beans and legumes and less frequently, fructose containing foods mentioned above. Gas and or bloating may also be the cause of abdominal pain. There is a greater chance of the abdominal pain being related to gas and bloating as the intestinal tract is 20-25 feet long.
