How many normal bowel movements per day should one have? This differs among everyone and can be between one to three per day.
Normal bowel movements per day differ with each person. The amount of food you eat and how much fecal material is evacuated determines how many normal bowel movements per day you may have.
If the amount of food you eat per day meets the caloric requirements you have based on your height, weight and physical activity level, the number per day can be between one to three. If your habit is to evacuate a large amount of material once per day, that may be enough for you for that day. Some people may evacuate smaller amounts after each meal. It seems that for them…”a little weight coming in at the top of the tube will push some weight out at the bottom of the tube”.
Normal bowel movements per day can be affected by not eating enough food. I have had patients who were actually only eating one third of the calories per day they needed to based on their height, weight and physical activity level, so it would be normal for them to only have a movement once every three days.
