A microscopic colitis diet can be determined specifically for you. As differences exist between people, differences also exist in the reason you have microscopic colitis and the steps necessary for you to conquer your condition. Many microscopic colitis patients embrace some of the same dietary advice and others have a different set of rules. As part of Dr. Dahlman’s phone consultation treatment plan, he will personally design your diet to maximize your chances of addressing this condition sucessfully.

A microscopic colitis diet has some similarities in it with other patients and some differences based on the patient’s own unique set of circumstances. Microscopic colitis is diagnosed when the patient reports diarrhea and their doctor finds inflamed tissue upon microscopic investigation of the colon.

You are different than other patients with colitis. You have different genes, different life health experiences and a different biochemical individuality than others do. That means that a diet for microscopic colitis can be designed for you by eliminating some foods for all microscopic colitis and also by stopping eating some foods that are unique to you.

We must start with what all microscopic colitis patients should not eat. No dairy products and no gluten containing foods. Both are pro-inflammatory.

Please eliminate all dairy products other than butter. Reading ingredient lists on all labels on products in your house looking for the words milk, cheese, lactose, whey and casein may surprise you where you will find hidden dairy and can assure you of it not creeping into your diet.

A microscopic colitis diet for all will also include the elimination of gluten containing foods. Remove all wheat, oats, barley and rye from your diet.

A more detailed discussion about how to eliminate both dairy and gluten can be found in Dr. Dahlman’s free Crohn’s/Colitis report available at the bottom of this page.

What makes you unique are other sets of circumstances from your life. Because of this, a specific diet for microscopic colitis can be determined for you by a food allergy test that will reveal what foods are contributing to the inflammation of colitis and causing your symptoms. This is what fine tunes your diet and answers your question about why you cannot figure out what to eat or not eat. It is Dr. Dahlman’s belief that no microscopic colitis patient can get well without learning their food allergies.

By avoiding dairy, gluten and the foods found positive on your food allergy test, this means all other foods are considered safe to eat…for now.

If you continue to have symptoms even though you follow the above advice and are using the all natural supplements Dr. Dahlman recommends…the elimination of fructose may be necessary.

Not by all, but many doctors are finding increased numbers of patients with lymphocytic colitis who are having trouble with fructose containing foods. Fructose is found in all fruit, peas, tomatoes, onions, eggplant, sweet potatoes, corn, beets, carrots, turnips and winter squash. Additionally, all type of sugar must also be avoided (table sugar, sucrose, honey, maple syrup, molasses, agave, cane sugar).

Once again, more detail can be found in Dr. Dahlman’s free Crohn’s/Colitis report available for download at the bottom of this article.

A planned step-by-step process of elimination of these foods while we utilize all-natural supplements to re-establish beneficial bacterial balances and restore proper chemistry while also using natural anti-inflammatory herbs and other compounds is the strength of Dr. Dahlman’s diet for microscopic colitis treatment. (Please understand you may not need to eliminate all of the food groups mentioned and the elimination may or may not be permanent.)
