Meckel’s diverticulum and small bowel obstruction can be painful and confusing and can appear together or independently of each other. Meckel’s diverticulum is common, but pain and other symptoms are rare. Small bowel obstruction can occur mostly in people who do not have optimal bowel health.

Meckel’s diverticulum and small bowel obstruction can occur together or independently of each other. Meckel’s diverticulum is a congenital defect that happens when a pouch of tissue forms on the wall of the lower part of your small intestines. The pouch is the remains of your umbilical cord from when you were a fetus that should have been absorbed by the body.

Meckel’s diverticulum is usually without symptoms, but if it becomes infected and inflamed (Meckel’s diverticulitis), the symptoms are essentially indistinguishable from acute appendicitis and requires prompt medical attention.

Diverticulitis occurs when the diverticula bulge outward through weak spots in the lining of the colon and becomes infected and inflammed. Diverticulitis can occur throughout the digestive tract, but most occur in the large intestine. Meckel’s diverticulum occurs in the small intestine.

Small Bowel Obstruction

Small bowel obstruction can have many causes and depending on the level of obstruction, small bowel obstruction can present with abdominal pain, abdominal distension, vomiting, fecal vomiting, and constipation.

The pain tends to be colicky (cramping and intermittent), with spasms lasting a few minutes. The pain tends to be central and mid-abdominal. Vomiting occurs before constipation.

Small bowel obstruction may occur in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s Disease, any type of colitis and other inflammatory bowel conditions. Surgery may cause adhesions that can obstruct the bowel also.

Note that diverticulitis is an inflammatory condition.

Natural Treatment: Meckel’s / Small Bowel Obstruction

Since you are born with Meckel’s diverticulum, you would not know you had it unless it becomes diverticulitis. If you have been diagnosed with it or with small bowel obstruction, it’s a sign that your gastrointestinal system is not as healthy as it should be and it’s important to take steps to improve its health. But, how?

After traditional medical treatment of either of these conditions, re-establishment of the beneficial bacterial population, restoration of proper chemistry of the tissue that lines the system and dietary changes are necessary to change the course you are on and prevent a re-occurrence.

Without necessary bacterial balances…the chemistry of the gastrointestinal system changes and certain foods become villains. This entire sequence of events promotes the inflammatory process.

The main focus must remain on the inflammatory contribution of certain factors in these conditions. Meckel’s diverticulitis can improve and prevention of a re-occurrence is enhanced if beneficial bacterial populations are optimized, anti-inflammatory herbs and other anti-inflammatory compounds are taken as dietary supplements, dairy and gluten containing foods are removed and a food allergy test identifying pro-inflammatory foods is done to fine tune the diet.

Small bowel obstruction is not necessarily an inflammatory problem though it can occur in inflammatory conditions. It can be taken as a sign that the health of your gastrointestinal system is not optimal and the body responds by “narrowing” a portion of the intestines or muscles in spasm tighten and narrow the area. Small bowel obstructions also respond positively to the protocol described in the above paragraph.

Please fill out the form below to receive a copy of Dr. Dahlman’s free report about Crohn’s Disease and Colitis…even though you may not have those conditions…as remember I mentioned Meckel’s diverticulitis is an inflammatory condition and so are Crohn’s Disease and Colitis. This treatment plan will end the inflammatory component to these conditions. Small bowel obstruction will also respond to the information in this report.
